Thank you for the IESL students for joining us for the last conversation hour! The students played ping-pong and the game of life! You-jung won the game of life, but Chris and the girls didn't give up! We shared lots of laughs and smiles.
Ellen came to Community Interaction class today to talk to the ACE students about Our Green Thumb community garden on MIIS campus. The students learned lots of good facts about soil and how to take care of it. They learned about the importance of bees, worms, composting, and more! After spending some of their Guided Activities in the garden, having Ellen come talk about the importance of sustainable gardening was a great way to wind-down the summer session! Thanks Ellen! The ACE students were invited to the ESL end-of-summer bonfire on Saturday. They made s'mores, went swimming, and shared Korean-pop music with the other students. A dance party soon followed. The ACE students also taught the other ESL students how to play rock-paper-scissors with splits.
The ACE students were invited to the SILP All Languages: End of Summer Potluck on Friday. Students had the opportunity to taste food from France, China, Russia, Spanish -speaking countries, and various Arabic speaking countries. After eating some food, they played ping-pong and taught a new friend how to play the game.
The ACE Students attended presentations by the EPGS students this week. Students listened to other ESL students give presentations about North Korean security threats and solutions, South Korean testing anxiety, and Chinese sexual education courses. The EPGS students really appreciated their attention and questions!
On Thursday, the students walked down to Monterey Kayaks by the ocean. Here they met three guest speakers: Dale, Jane, and Mick. These volunteers are from the Ke Kai O'uhane organization which focuses on sharing Hawaiian culture with Californians. They compete in canoe races, and participate in beach clean-ups. Mick greeted the students by playing the conch shell, as per Hawaiian tradition. They shared a bit about Hawaiian culture sharing language (Aloha, Ohana, huli, and mahalo, among other words). The students also learned about Hawaiian food, and the formation of the islands. Jane, Mick, and Dale also gave the students a short paddling demonstration. Thank you so much to these wonderful guest speakers! We had such a great time at the ACE bonfire! We ate some chicken, some ice-cream pastries, KFC, and some Hong-kong style snack foods. The host families and students hung out together around the campfire. Soon, the MIIS IESL students showed up and brought some marshmallows! The fire kept us warm as we relaxed by the ocean. Monterey can be chilly in July! Ximena came to our Community Interaction class today. She was representing the Surfrider foundation which works to protect the ocean environment around Monterey. The ACE students learned about the different ways to help reduce their "footprints" and come up with solutions for water pollution. They focused on plastics and discussed the 6Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink, refuse, and repair. They also had a dialogue about the differences in recycling and garbage management in the US and in Korea. Thanks to Ximena for such great presentation and discussion!
Today the ACE students got their official Middlebury Institute student ID cards! Now they will be able to receive local discounts.
We also had our first conversation hour! The ACE students got the chance to hang out with the Intensive English and Intensive Language students. We shared chocolates, laughs, and great conversation!
The first (English) conversation hour with our ACE, IESL, and SILP students was a big success! Join us next time for more fun and great conversations :)! #theta360 - Spherical Image - RICOH THETA |
